New School of San Juan

San Juan

The main design intent was to create a school with a firm sense of belonging and pride, yet with architectural features that would integrate their support facilities to the community thus becoming a social, cultural and academic icon in its surroundings.

Based on a pre-existing schematic design by others, the radial part was maintained but a new school entrance, arrival plaza, and new location for the gym/Pavilion were proposed. The facades were also adapted and reconfigured. The alternate design relocates the Pavilion to the front part of the school. This relocation would make the site work simpler and less expensive while providing what we believe is a better location for this facility. As part of the relocation our design provided a Plaza between the entrance of the school and the entrance of the Pavilion.  This new Plaza would act as the High School drop-off area. In addition it can serve as a Pre-function area to the Pavilion, an Outdoor Projection Area or an Amphitheater. Relocation to this area and other changes in materials and methods to the original scope of work would result in a total deduction of $820,000 to the base bid, while maintaining LEED certification standards.
